Kansai International Airport was the first airport in Japan to install AED devices that can be used by ordinary citizens. There are 54 AED units in total; 27 units in Terminal 1, 19 units in Terminal 2, and 8 units in the Aeroplaza, hotel, Observation Hall and other locations.
About AEDs
- An AED is a medical device that is used to restart the heart of a person who is
in cardiac arrest (ventricular fibrillation). The device works by giving the
patient an electric shock to remove the fibrillation (i.e. to defibrillate
them).
- AEDs were formerly only able to be used by trained medical personnel, but as of
July 1st, 2004, ordinary citizens have been permitted to use them.
- To use an AED, simply open the cover. The power will turn on automatically, and
it is then simply a matter of following the audio instructions. AEDs are easy to
operate, even for first-time users.
- Chances of survival are greatly increased when an AED is used in conjunction
with heart massage and CPR.
- All AEDs at KIX can give audio guidance in Japanese and English.
