Amami Airport (IATA: ASJ, ICAO: RJKA) is located on Amami Ōshima, the
largest island in Kagoshima Prefecture’s Amami archipelago. Situated about
30 km northeast of Amami City, the airport serves as the main gateway to the
subtropical Amami Islands, connecting them with mainland Japan and
neighboring islands.
Facilities
The airport features a modern, two-story terminal with a welcoming island
atmosphere. Facilities include restaurants serving local cuisine, souvenir
shops offering Amami specialties, car rental counters, ATMs, and free Wi-Fi.
There’s also a tourist information desk, nursing rooms, and an observation
deck with scenic views of the runway and surrounding mountains.
Accessibility features are available for passengers with limited mobility.
Airlines and Destinations
Japan Airlines (JAL), Skymark Airlines, and Japan Air Commuter (JAC) operate
regular domestic services linking Amami with Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka (Itami),
Fukuoka, Kagoshima, and other nearby islands such as Tokunoshima and
Okinoerabu. These connections make the airport an important hub for regional
transport in southern Japan.
Public Transportation
Access to Amami City and nearby resorts is available by bus (around 40
minutes) or taxi. Car rental is popular among visitors exploring the
island’s beaches, coral reefs, and lush forests, as public transport is
limited.
