Japan generally does not provide Visa on Arrival (VoA) for most foreign
travelers. Visitors must obtain the appropriate visa before arrival from a
Japanese embassy or consulate. However, citizens of over 70 visa-exempt
countries - including Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Canada,
Australia, the United Kingdom, and most EU nations—may enter Japan without a
visa for short stays ranging from 15 to 90 days, depending on nationality.
To enter Japan visa-free, travelers must hold a valid passport, a confirmed
return or onward ticket, sufficient funds, and details of their
accommodation. For those not eligible for visa exemption, a tourist or
business visa must be obtained prior to travel.
Japan’s major airports -
Narita,
Haneda,
Kansai, and
Chubu
Centrair do not issue tourist visas on arrival. Only in rare,
exceptional cases such as urgent official or humanitarian reasons may
temporary landing permission be granted, and this requires prior approval
from Japanese authorities.
Upon arrival, all passengers must undergo immigration inspection,
fingerprint scanning, and facial recognition. Travelers are advised to
verify entry requirements with the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate
well before departure to ensure a smooth and trouble-free arrival process at
Japanese airports.
